A cyclist, later confirmed as headteacher Michael Mullins, was killed in a collision with a car in Altrincham on Monday April 20, according to multiple reports. Michael Mullins was declared dead at the scene of the crash on Paddock Lane, Altrincham at around 6:10pm on April 20.
Simon Richardson, 34, of no fixed address, has been charged with murder, manslaughter, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving without insurance, Greater Manchester Police said. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court.
Michael Mullins, 56, lived in Weaverham near Northwich and had been headteacher of Stretford Grammar School for 17 years. In a statement, Mullins' family said he was devoted to his family and that a gap has been left in their hearts and within his role as a headteacher. They described him as a fantastic father who gave them great memories, including a trip getting lost at night around Washington D.C., but said he truly excelled as a grandfather. The family requested privacy and expressed that their love and memories of Michael will know no limits, loving him forever, to Saturn and beyond. Deputy headteacher Liz Bater said the news would be a dreadful shock to the school community, which was built up strongly over many years by Michael. She noted that as a staff body, they worked with Michael for many years and the relationships created can never be replaced. However, in his honour and as a mark of his tireless hard work for Stretford Grammar School, they will pull together to continue his legacy. Police are continuing to appeal for information and witnesses. The circumstances leading to the crash remain unclear, and it is not known whether the collision was intentional or accidental. No other victims or injuries have been reported.
