According to reports, the crash occurred on Saturday, April 18, 2026, during the race in France. Munoz required 20 stitches to his left knee after the accident. He left the hospital on Sunday night and traveled to Spain to join his teammates for another race scheduled for Thursday, according to his team.
On Tuesday, Munoz was taken to a hospital in Valladolid due to swelling in his knee. Medical staff detected a serious infection that required urgent care, according to reports. Munoz posted a birthday wish to his partner Angela on Instagram on Tuesday, just days before his death. He was a former teammate of Tadej Pogacar at UAE Team Emirates, having raced for the team in 2021 and 2022 before joining NU Colombia.
