Key Points
  • Anna broke both shoulders after tripping over an unmarked floor edge at Elgiganten in Malmö
  • She requires home care due to her injuries and cannot manage basic daily tasks
  • Elgiganten says it will rebuild the edge and review other stores but won't comment on Anna's specific case

Anna was with her son at the Elgiganten store in Svågertorp, Malmö, when she tripped over an unmarked edge in the floor in the computer department and fell forward without using her hands, according to Aftonbladet. She broke her fall with her shoulders and face, the outlet reports. The pain was so severe that ambulance personnel administered morphine on site before she could be moved, multiple reports indicate.

At the hospital, doctors determined that both shoulders were broken, with the right one broken in several places, Aftonbladet reports. Anna now requires home care several times a day because she cannot manage food, bed, or toilet on her own, the outlet states. Elgiganten takes the incident seriously, will rebuild the edge into a slope, and will review other stores, the company said.

I was lying on the store floor and screaming.

However, Elgiganten does not want to comment on details in Anna's specific case, a spokesperson confirmed. According to Aftonbladet, Anna described lying on the store floor and screaming. She also told the outlet that the incident was unnecessary, saying that if there had been a warning there, it wouldn't have happened.

It remains unclear what specific safety standards apply to floor edges in Swedish retail stores, whether Elgiganten has faced similar incidents previously, or what legal actions Anna might pursue.

It is so unnecessary. If there had been a warning there, it wouldn't have happened.
