Key Points
  • Craig Charles revealed a serious heart condition requiring daily medication
  • He has narrow arteries, the same condition that killed his brother
  • An emergency response involved ambulance dispatchers and stent surgery

Craig Charles opened up about his health issues on I'm a Celebrity, revealing he is on significant medication for his heart. According to Daily Express - Showbiz, Craig Charles described being on so much medication that he cannot say the words, and he takes about eight tablets every day. Charles's condition involved narrow arteries in his heart, the same issue that killed his brother.

He experienced symptoms including a tingling jaw and not feeling great. During the emergency, Charles's wife's sister-in-law, a nurse, advised calling an ambulance. Charles did not call initially because he did not want to go alone.

I'm on so much medication right, and I can't say the words. I can't say them at all.

The ambulance dispatcher thought he was having a heart attack and asked what color he was, to which his wife replied he is brown. Doctors inserted stents using a wire attached to a balloon to widen his artery. After the procedure, Charles had 100% blood flow to his heart.

Fans expressed concern for Charles's heart during a grueling trial on I'm a Celebrity, and Scarlett Moffat praised him as brave for returning to the show. Charles said the death of his brother Dean changed his life and made him re-evaluate things, reflecting on the personal impact of his health scare.

I'm on about eight tablets every day.

I've got four stents in my heart... The arteries in my heart were narrow. It's the same thing that killed my brother when I was here last time.

They told me 'this is genetic, you need to go and get that looked at'.

I gave her a ring and said 'I'm going to have a lie down, I don't feel great. My jaw's like tingling'.

Craig Charles, Actor and DJ

So I didn't because you don't want to go in the bloody ambulance on your own do you, to the hospital?

Craig Charles, Actor and DJ

So by now I was having a heart attack, but I was laughing my socks off at the same time!

They put a wire in which is attached to a balloon and then they blow the balloon up and stick a stent in. It goes all the way up into your heart and widens the artery.

Apparently, I was existing on only 35% blood to my heart, and when they put the stents in, it went to 100% blood to my heart. So they saved me.

I gave her a ring, something like that ‘I don't feel great, man. My jaws are tingling’.

Anyway, her sister in law's a nurse and said to call for an ambulance, so I didn't, because you don't call the ambulance on your own.

She asked ‘what colour is he?’ And she [wife] said ‘he’s brown’. So by now I am having a heart attack and laughing my socks off.

My brother had the same thing, but he passed out, he was working at a school as a teacher.

Craig Charles, Actor and DJ

I think Craig is really, really brave coming back somewhere where you found out the most devastating news must be really hard.

Scarlett Moffat, Campmate

The death of my brother, Dean, changed my life the last time I was on I’m A Celebrity. I was 50 at the time, my brother was 52, I had been in Corrie for ten years and I came in to do the jungle, then Dean passed away. It made me re-evaluate things. I just thought if that had happened to me, would I be happy with what I’d achieved? I came up with the answer and it was ‘no’.
