A cracked wheel was discovered on an X2000 train on Sunday afternoon, and the train was taken out of service, according to multiple reports. The discovery prompted SJ to launch inspections across its fleet, affecting services on key routes.
Staff heard an unusual noise during the journey, which led to the discovery of the damaged wheel, Lina Edström, SJ press officer, said. Edström stated that staff heard an unusual noise during the journey and it turned out a wheel had been damaged. She added that SJ is following safety procedures and inspecting all trains with wheels from the same series.
SJ is following safety procedures and inspecting all trains with wheels from the same series, Edström confirmed. The inspections will take place overnight and during the morning at SJ depots in Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Malmö, according to multiple reports. The issue affects 21 of the approximately 30 X2000 trains that SJ operates on the routes Stockholm–Gothenburg, Gothenburg–Stockholm, Stockholm–Malmö, and Malmö–Stockholm.
SJ hopes to have inspected all trains by lunchtime, and those that pass will be returned to service, Edström said. She expressed hope that all trains would be inspected by lunchtime and that those passing inspection would be put back into service. So far, 37 departures have been canceled, and SJ has canceled a number of departures between Stockholm and Gothenburg as well as Malmö on Monday. The cancellations are due to a broken wheel.
The cause of the crack remains unknown, and it is unclear how many passengers have been affected by the cancellations. SJ has not yet announced compensation or alternative transport arrangements for affected passengers.
