The airport's owner, Rigby Group, has notified the UK Civil Aviation Authority of the planned closure. A CAA spokesperson confirmed that Coventry Aerodrome has given formal notice of its plan to close the airport permanently with effect from 11 June 2026. The final flight will depart on May 9, 2026, and the airport will officially close on June 11, 2026.
The gigafactory planning permission was granted in 2022. Currently, no commercial passenger flights operate from Coventry Airport. The airport serves only the Air Ambulance Service and private charter flights.
This procedural submission, first envisaged when local planning approval for Green Power Park was granted in 2022, enables the next phase of infrastructure work for the site to proceed.
The airport began as an RAF base during World War II called Baginton Aerodrome. The gigafactory is expected to create thousands of jobs. 5 billion in private investment.
The exact timeline for gigafactory construction remains unclear, and it is unknown how many jobs will ultimately be created. The fate of the Air Ambulance Service after the airport closes has not been announced, and it is unclear whether alternative airports for private charter flights are available in the area.
