She was initially sentenced to 20 months in January for bribery, including receiving luxury gifts such as a Chanel bag and a diamond necklace. The appeals court also found her guilty of market manipulation, leading to the longer term. In addition to the prison term, Kim was ordered to pay a fine of 50 million won (about $34,000).
She is married to former President Yoon Suk-Yeol. Yoon Suk-Yeol was sentenced to life imprisonment in February for insurrection related to the martial law he declared in 2024. He has appealed that sentence.
It is unclear whether Kim will appeal or when she will begin serving her sentence.
