Bibury Parish Council opposed the plans, calling the fireplace 'huge' and 'not in keeping with its surroundings', especially given the historic importance of the cottage. The council noted that the fireplace was built without planning permission and expressed concerns about the competence of the site advisors. Local residents have voiced outrage, with one describing the development as a 'monstrosity' in comments to the Daily Mail.
Building work has caused constant noise and disruption since 2023, with trucks churning up verges and blocking gates, according to locals. The couple's representatives denied claims of overdevelopment but their full response was incomplete. Previous applications included stripping and replacing Cotswold stone slate roof tiles and adding insulation, while applications for an oak conservatory and stone summerhouse were withdrawn in January.
The fireplace is huge, not in keeping with its surroundings, especially as curtilage on a very important Grade 2 historic cottage. The whole area is recognised as an area of national importance and special character. From various angles the chimney can be seen and changes the historic view.
The status of the underground car park proposal and the outcome of the 'part retrospective' application with Cotswold District Council remain unclear.
The parish council have serious concerns about the care and competency of the site advisors / architects allowing such construction to take place on this historically sensitive site without seeking planning permission. We again request the planning officer monitor the site more regularly, as a whole site rather than individual projects.
