China plans £20bn Bohai Strait tunnel to cut travel time
Key Points
  • The tunnel would cost £20bn and be 123km long.
  • It would cut travel time from 8 hours to 40 minutes.
  • Engineering challenges include fault zones and earthquake-resistant design.

A 56-mile section of the tunnel would sit beneath the water, exceeding the combined underwater lengths of the Channel Tunnel and the Seikan Tunnel, major media report. Trains on the Bohai Strait Tunnel are expected to reach speeds exceeding 150 mph, reducing travel time by almost 90%. Construction is expected to take between 10 and 15 years, but when work might begin is unknown.

The tunnel will traverse multiple fault zones and is planned to use earthquake-resistant technology, although specific technologies are not publicly known. It would run approximately 80 metres beneath the seabed and feature longitudinal ventilation shafts and cross-passages connecting two parallel tunnels, with several hundred emergency refuge zones, according to major media. Dalian is a major port and financial, shipping, and logistics hub, while Yantai has expanded in petrochemicals, automotive manufacturing, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and technology sectors.
