The shooting occurred at around 10:50 a.m. at the hospital, according to multiple reports. The suspect is in custody and a weapon was recovered, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said. The hospital campus was placed on lockdown, but by midafternoon there was no active threat. Patients and staff were safe, officials said.

According to a Facebook posting by Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, the individual in custody had been brought to the emergency department for treatment and was wanded upon arrival. The man later fired shots at law enforcement officers and exited the building before being apprehended.

Snelling said the deceased officer was 38 years old with 10 years of service, and the injured officer is 57 with 21 years of service. "Officers transported an individual over to the Swedish hospital for an observation, at which time two of our officers were shot," Snelling said. "One was shot critically. It (the death) was pronounced. The second officer right now is fighting for his life." Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city is providing mental health support services to police officers. "Today is a real difficult moment for our city. It's a tragedy," Johnson said.
