Chelsea reports record financial loss for English club

Key Points
  • Chelsea reported a record financial loss of 4.3 billion kronor for the 2024-25 season.
  • High wage costs and increased operational expenses contributed to the loss, according to reports.
  • The loss is the largest for an English club but smaller than FC Barcelona's loss in 2021.

Chelsea Football Club has reported a record financial loss for an English club, according to a new UEFA report. 3 billion Swedish kronor or 355 million pounds, for the 2024-25 season. This surpasses any previous loss by an English football club.

The club is owned by the consortium Blue Co, led by majority owner Todd Boehly, who took over after Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich was forced to sell due to British sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to reports, one reason for Chelsea's financial troubles is high wage costs, with the club spending 388 million pounds on salaries in the 2024-25 season, an increase of 43 million pounds from the previous season. Operational costs reportedly rose by over 80 million pounds in the same period.

Meanwhile, some revenues declined, with commercial income reportedly down by 5 million pounds and merchandise and shirt sales reportedly significantly lower than other top Premier League clubs. Despite this, Chelsea's loss is not the largest in Europe; FC Barcelona reportedly recorded a larger loss in 2021. The club's participation and victory in the Club World Cup in summer 2025 brought in 192 million pounds in broadcasting revenue, a figure only surpassed by Manchester City.
