Historic sites in Bari include the 11th-century Basilica of Saint Nicholas and Piazza del Ferrarese, which contains remnants of a Roman road from the 2nd century. On Strada Arco Bass, residents make orecchiette pasta on the street. Travel authority Mark Wolters advised visiting to see "grandmas making orecchiette" and said he bought two bags for five euros.
A local specialty is focaccia barese, made with mashed potato and semolina flour. Wolters described it as "fluffy bread with tomatoes and olives."
