The victim disappeared on July 31, 2019, after leaving for an errand and was reported missing by relatives that evening. His body was discovered on August 10 in a wooded area outside Markaryd, and authorities determined he had been killed and robbed of his car. Both suspects, born in 1971 and citizens of Ukraine, were arrested abroad—one in Germany in August 2019 and the other in Poland in December 2019.
The extensive preliminary investigation has concluded, and charges were filed on Friday, May 8, 2020, at Växjö District Court. The men face charges of murder, alternatively aggravated assault and aggravated causing another's death, as well as vehicle theft. One of the men is also charged with attempted fraud for trying to withdraw money from the victim's bank account using his ATM card in Stockholm.
Police held a press conference at the Växjö police station on the same day, with prosecutor Gunilla Öhlin participating. Yvonne Rudinsson, vice chief prosecutor at the Växjö prosecutor's office, confirmed the arrest in Germany and stated that contact has been made with German police for extradition, which she considers likely. The location of the second man was unknown at the time of the initial arrests.
Police have also investigated possible connections to a missing person case in Malå, Västerbotten, where an 80-year-old man disappeared after a bike ride. The stolen car from the Markaryd murder was seen in Malå days before the 80-year-old vanished, and a voting card from 2018 linked to the Markaryd victim was found at a rest stop. However, according to police, there is nothing to suggest the two disappearances are connected.
The Malå case is being investigated as a kidnapping, which does not mean police believe a crime has been committed. In a separate incident in Markaryd, a man in his 35s was subjected to a murder attempt in central Markaryd during the weekend. A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of the deed.
Police received a report around 9:30 PM on Saturday evening about an older man attacking a younger man with a sharp object inside an apartment in central Markaryd. The man was later detained by a prosecutor, suspected of attempted murder, aggravated unlawful threat, and aggravated weapons offense. The attack occurred opposite a school, and a principal at the school alerted police and ambulance.
The stabbed man, who is in his 45s, sustained serious injuries. The 48-year-old left the scene in a car and was later arrested in Örkelljunga. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for attempted murder, as first reported by P4 Kronoberg.
Fuel will be rationed this summer if the shortage continues.
The 48-year-old is also convicted of child peace violation because his son was forced to witness the attack. He is ordered to pay 266,000 SEK in damages to the stabbed man and 256,000 SEK in damages to his own son. A man from Skåne who was wanted after a brawl in Markaryd is now detained.
According to other media, he turned himself in at the police station in Lund last night. Yesterday morning, the man entered a house in Markaryd and threatened several people with a tool, and also stabbed and hit them. The man is now suspected of attempted murder, alternatively manslaughter, aggravated unlawful threat, and aggravated home invasion.
Across Sweden, several other violent incidents have been reported. A man was arrested in Farsta after assaulting another man with a weapon. A man is suspected of assaulting a person he has a relationship with and was arrested.
A man in his 30s was detained on suspicion of attempted aggravated assault. A man was arrested after an alarm about domestic violence. A man in his 65s was arrested on suspicion of assault.
A man was arrested for hitting his wife. A man in Lidköping was arrested suspected of assaulting his partner. A man in Älvsbyn was arrested for assaulting a woman during the night; he had hidden in the residence.
A man in his 40s is charged with unlawful persecution and child abuse; the persecution occurred from May to November 2025 after the couple broke up in April. In other criminal investigations, a person was stabbed at Borggården in Linköping on Saturday afternoon; a suspect was arrested on Ågatan shortly after. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
A man in his 20s was arrested after breaking into a garage in Motala during the night to Monday. The police were alerted by both the villa's automatic alarm and the residents who saw a person with a flashlight in the garage. A man was arrested in Årjäng for attempted aggravated assault after threatening people.
