Ceiling Collapses at Swedish School Parking Garage, No Injuries Reported
Key Points
  • A ceiling collapsed at a school parking garage in Eskilstuna with no injuries
  • Traffic was trapped and emergency services responded to the scene
  • Preliminary assessment points to substandard fastening of insulation and ceiling panels

A ceiling collapsed at Munktell School in Eskilstuna on Monday morning, according to multiple reports. The collapse occurred at the entrance and exit to a parking garage, Aftonbladet reports. No person was injured in the ceiling collapse, multiple reports indicate.

Traffic was trapped in the garage by the collapse debris, Aftonbladet reports. A major response was initiated with police, rescue services, and ambulance, Aftonbladet reports. The area has been temporarily cordoned off, Aftonbladet reports.

It's lucky that no one was passing in or out so that they would have gotten all that on them whether they were pedestrians or drivers.

The parking garage is located under an elementary school with over 500 students, Aftonbladet reports. The municipality's property company (Kommunfastigheter) owns the building where the ceiling collapsed, Aftonbladet reports. The assessment is that the fastening of the insulation and ceiling panels was substandard and the insulation became too heavy for the panels to hold up, according to Kfast CEO Fredrik Elf.

"Our assessment is that the fastening of the insulation and ceiling panels was substandard and that the insulation became too heavy for the panels to hold up," Elf said. "It's lucky that no one was passing in or out so that they would have gotten all that on them whether they were pedestrians or drivers," said Stig Bergman, a person trapped in his car in the garage. The exact time of the collapse on Monday morning has not been confirmed, and it remains unclear how many vehicles or people were trapped.

The specific structural cause of the insulation becoming too heavy is still under investigation, and authorities have not announced when the area will be reopened.
