Cats abandoned by moving neighbors spark concern
Key Points
  • Two cats were abandoned by moving neighbours in separate incidents.
  • One cat was left after an eviction; another received a goodbye letter.
  • Efforts to reunite cats with owners involved RSPCA and microchipping.

A woman named Jeeno discovered that her neighbours, who had been evicted, left their cat behind, according to major media reports. Jeeno fed the cat chicken and created a shelter in her garden, but initially hesitated to bring the cat indoors due to her dog. She contacted the RSPCA for guidance. The RSPCA visited and found the cat was not microchipped, classifying it as a stray. Jeeno also consulted the council about their stray cat policy. The council provided the RSPCA with the neighbours' contact details, leading to the cat's reunion with its owners. Jeeno said on TikTok that her neighbours had been evicted and left their cat behind, and that the council gave the RSPCA the contact details, leading to the cat's return within hours.

In a separate case, a woman named Amber Liddon received a goodbye letter addressed to her cat Leo from neighbours who were moving out, according to major media reports. The letter included a photo of Leo taken by the neighbour. Amber had never spoken to those neighbours before. Her cat Leo is described as sociable and well-loved in the area. The letter read: "To Leo, we are moving and will miss you Leo! You are the best cat ever." Amber Liddon posted on social media that the note made her feel sad but also full of love for the fact that the neighbours loved her cat so much.

My neighbours got kicked out two days ago, and they left their cat behind.

Meanwhile, a cat named Louie from Stoke-on-Trent went missing in late 2023 and was reunited with his owner after two years, according to major media reports. Louie was found as a stray, taken to a cat rescue centre, and his microchip was scanned. Microchipping cats became a legal requirement in England in June 2024. According to BBC News - England, Healey, Louie's owner, described the cat as "very sweet but always timid" and said he often hid, so when Louie didn't return, he assumed the cat had become locked in a garage or shed. Healey also said he originally adopted Louie nine years ago as a rescue kitten that had been living as a stray with his mother and littermates. After the reunion, Healey said Louie is "clearly very happy to be back" and has no desire to go outside, so he has become a house cat. Matt Humphrey, a vet, told BBC News - England that they will probably never know where Louie has been for the past two years, but cats are very adaptable and survivors. Humphrey added that although Louie no longer wants to go outside, it is probably because he prefers the comfort, safety and security of staying in, which can be a common trait in aging cats.

The incidents underscore the problem of pet abandonment during moves. While the number of cats abandoned by moving owners each year is not known, the RSPCA and other animal welfare organisations continue to urge pet owners to plan ahead when relocating.

The council gave the RSPCA the contact details for my neighbours. They contacted them, and within a couple of hours, my neighbours came to my house and got the cat.

Thanks number 22, you’ve ruined my day at 8am... emotional damage.

Amber Liddon, Cat owner

The note made me feel sad but also full of love for the fact that they love him so much as he has impacted their lives these past three to four years.

Amber Liddon, Cat owner

I originally adopted Louie nine years ago. He was a rescue kitten and had been living as a stray with his mum and the rest of the litter.

Healey, Cat owner

I picked him up and brought him home and he's clearly very happy to be back, so much so that he has no desire to go outside, so he's become a house cat.

Healey, Cat owner

We'll probably never know where he's been for the past two years, but cats are very adaptable and they're survivors.

Matt Humphrey, Vet

Although Louie no longer wants to go outside, it's probably because he prefers the comfort, safety and security of staying in, which can also be a common trait in cats as they age, but hopefully he can now put his ordeal behind him.
