Store in Fagersta sold 16-year-old snacks with relabeled dates
Key Points
  • A store in Fagersta sold 16-year-old corn puffs after relabeling them with a 2026 best-before date.
  • Food hygiene experts say relabeling is forbidden, but selling past-date items with original labels is legal.
  • The manufacturer has only produced this type of corn puffs since 2022, raising questions about the old stock.

According to several media outlets, including Sveriges Radio, TV4, Aftonbladet, and Fagersta Nyheter, a store in Fagersta recently sold snack bags that were 16 years old after relabeling them. P4 Västmanland was the first to report on the grocery store selling the old corn puffs. The bag was sold with a best-before date in September 2026, but removing the label revealed the real date was in July 2010.

The Environmental Administration received a complaint from a customer and conducted a food inspection. The store did not try to deceive customers; the explanation lies with the manufacturer, which has only produced this specific type of corn puffs since 2022. " However, she noted, "I would in that case recommend that they had sold these with the original labeling.

It is forbidden to relabel a product with a longer shelf life.

" Follow-ups have been done on how dangerous it is to eat such old corn puffs, as reported by P4 Västmanland and Expressen. Danielsson-Tham explained, "You taste them, of course. " The exact health risk of consuming 16-year-old corn puffs remains unclear.

Authorities have not specified what actions, if any, have been taken against the store or manufacturer.

I would in that case recommend that they had sold these with the original labeling. But on the other hand, who would want to buy 16-year-old corn puffs?
