Bus Drivers at Alstermo Depot Without Water and Toilets for Nearly a Week

Key Points
  • Bus drivers at Connect Bus depot in Alstermo have been without running water and toilet facilities for nearly a week.
  • Drivers cannot make coffee, wash dishes, or use toilets during breaks that can last up to eight hours.
  • Connect Bus says freezing conditions caused the water problems and they are working on solutions while providing water containers to drivers.

Bus drivers at the Connect Bus depot in Alstermo, Sweden, have been working without access to running water and functional toilets for nearly a week, according to reports from local media. The situation has created what drivers describe as an increasingly unsustainable working environment.

According to SVT Småland, drivers taking breaks between routes at the depot - which can last from 40 minutes up to eight hours - have been without water and sewage facilities. They cannot make coffee, wash dishes, or use toilets. Driver Hans-Olof Geraldsson explained that when drivers need to use a toilet, they must rely on the local library or Folkets house when they are open.

This is just a follow-up of all the problems that have existed so far.

Hans Olof Gerhardsson, driver

Smålandsposten reported that the water problem began last Friday, leaving drivers without functioning toilets and no ability to wash. The newspaper quoted driver Hans Olof Gerhardsson stating, "This is just a follow-up of all the problems that have existed so far."

Connect Bus, which operates the depot, declined interview requests but responded via email that they have had water problems at the depot due to freezing conditions and are working to resolve the issue. Per Bramefelt, business area manager at the company, stated that additional help would be in place tomorrow morning and that drivers would receive water containers to use in the depot while alternative solutions are being developed.
