Key Points
  • British air steward Keith Newman arrested for allegedly pushing a teenage girl in a queue dispute at Disney World
  • Newman charged with battery, pleaded not guilty, released on bail, and faces potential penalties including jail time
  • Incident occurred on February 20, with victim and friend providing accounts of the altercation and spillage

Newman was arrested on a battery charge and has pleaded not guilty. He has been released on a $1,000 bail and has returned home to the UK, where he could face a fine or up to a year in jail if convicted. The incident occurred on February 20, according to an arrest affidavit filed with the Orange County Court in Florida. Officer Richard Schorr stated that the victim told him she was with a group of family and friends. The girl said she was trying to 'catch up with the rest of her group' who were already in the queue for the Tiana's Bayou Adventure ride, the affidavit stated.

The victim said that as she and her friend were walking through the line passing people, Newman put his hands out trying to stop her from moving forward. She stated she told him she was just trying to catch up with her group, which was not too far ahead, and he still kept his hand out to stop her. She said she tried to go around Newman but he pushed her back with both hands. She fell backwards into her friend, and the water bottle she was holding spilled all over her friend.

I hope this sends a message that it's never OK to put your hands on someone else except for self-defence, especially somebody a lot younger than you and from the opposite sex.

The girl's friend told police that Newman had told them 'There's a queue' when they tried to go past. The friend said Newman pushed the victim with one hand, but she wouldn't let him move her, so he used two hands. According to Daily Mail - News, the victim's father described Newman's actions as 'inexcusable' and said he hopes this sends a message that it's never OK to put your hands on someone else except for self-defence, especially somebody a lot younger and from the opposite sex. He added that his daughter is 18 but looks 15, and there's no mistaking she was a child, so for Newman to put his hands on a child was wrong.

The current status of the legal proceedings against Keith Newman remains unclear, and it is unknown whether Virgin Atlantic has commented on the incident or Newman's employment status. The full name and identity of the victim have not been disclosed. Authorities have not specified if there were any witnesses to the incident besides the victim and her friend, or what specific evidence, such as video footage, has been collected.
