Nikita Haikin, who previously held Israeli, British, and Russian citizenships, has lived in Bodø since 2019, except for a short period in 2023 when he played for Bristol City in England. The Norwegian Football Federation has worked to arrange citizenship for Haikin, according to multiple reports. Haikin is married to a Norwegian woman, and he previously played U-national team matches for Russia. A formal national team switch must be approved by FIFA before Haikin can represent Norway, though the timeline for that approval remains uncertain.
Former Bodø/Glimt profile and expert commentator Trond Olsen believes Norwegian citizenship opens doors for Nikita Haikin. Olsen has great faith that Haikin can get a place on the national team, but he does not believe it will be easy for Haikin to match national team first-choice goalkeeper Ørjan Håskjold Nyland.
It is a big day for me.
Norwegian national team coach Ståle Solbakken says Haikin will be assessed like everyone else and sees him as a competitor for a spot. Solbakken says that if there were a match today, Ørjan Nyland would be their first-choice goalkeeper.
