Key Points
  • BTH has over 10,000 applicants for a semester start for the first time, a 26% increase from last year.
  • Independent courses and course packages drove the surge with a 59% rise, while longer programs grew by about 2%.
  • The nursing program leads with 954 applicants, and there is large interest in AI-related education.

The application period for colleges and universities ended last week, with Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) reporting its highest-ever applicant numbers for a semester start. This is the first time BTH has surpassed 10,000 applicants for a semester start, representing a 26 percent rise compared to the previous year. According to SVT Blekingenytt, Eva Pettersson, the prorector of BTH, described the surge as a positive development, noting the institute has never placed itself so high before.

The increase is driven largely by independent courses and course packages, which saw a 59 percent year-over-year jump, while longer programs experienced a more moderate growth of around 2 percent. Among the most popular programs, web programming at a distance has maintained its top position for several years, and the nursing program now leads with 954 applicants. According to SVT Blekingenytt, Eva Pettersson described a large interest in education related to AI, suggesting many may feel a need for skills development.

It's really fun. I don't think we've ever placed ourselves so high before.

The exact numbers for web programming and other programs besides nursing have not been disclosed, and it is unclear which specific AI-related courses are fueling the interest. Factors behind the sharp rise in independent courses remain unknown, as does how this increase compares to national application trends. Blekinge student union views the increased interest positively, with Caela Landin, its chairperson, telling SVT Blekingenytt that they hope it leads to more events benefiting student life in Karlskrona, though specific initiatives have not been detailed.

We notice, for example, that there is a large interest in education related to AI. It could be that many feel a need for skills development.

We hope that the increased interest leads to more events that can benefit student life here in Karlskrona.
