Parkes signed for Blackburn Rovers in 1970 from non-league Buxton Town for a fee of £5,000, according to the club. He went on to make 409 appearances for the club, scoring 46 goals. After his playing career, he joined the coaching staff and assumed caretaker manager responsibilities on six separate occasions between 1986 and 2004, the club stated. His long service and loyalty earned him the nickname 'Mr Blackburn Rovers'.

He was appointed caretaker manager of Blackpool following Simon Grayson's resignation in December 2008, the club confirmed. Blackpool FC also paid tribute, saying everyone at the club was devastated to hear the news and sending love and best wishes to his family.

A special tribute will be held to celebrate Tony Parkes' life at Blackburn Rovers' final home game of the season against Leicester City on Saturday May 2nd, the club announced. It is not yet known if further tributes are planned beyond that match. Parkes is survived by his daughter Natalie, but details about other family members have not been confirmed.
