Bishop Johan Dalman of Strängnäs stift has announced he will retire next year when he turns 67, according to reports from local media. Dalman, who has served as bishop since 2015 and previously as dean since 2008, made the announcement through a Facebook post that was later removed, though the diocese confirmed the information to Kyrkans Tidning.
Marlene W. Antonsson, press secretary for Strängnäs stift, stated that a new bishop is planned to be consecrated on September 12, 2027. According to Antonsson, a timeline for the election process will be decided during the spring term, with more detailed information to be released at that time.
Dalman, the 58th bishop in succession, is known for his cultural interests and connection to England, where he studied at Oxford University. He also serves as royal court preacher and has baptized several children in the royal family. The bishop gained viral attention in 2024 when he presented the cathedral with a script aimed at Generation Z.
More information about the election of a new bishop is expected later this spring as the diocese prepares for the leadership transition.
