Matteo Berrettini defeated world number ten Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 6-0 in the second round of the Monte Carlo clay tournament. It was the fourth time a top 10 player has been double-bageled on the ATP Tour since professionals were allowed in 1968. Medvedev, who is coached by Thomas Johansson, had shown strong form this winter and spring, including a win over world number one Carlos Alcaraz.
During the match, Medvedev smashed his racket on the court until it broke and then threw it in the trash. He was reportedly furious during the match. Berrettini, who has fallen to 90th in the rankings, said in an on-court interview on TV4's broadcast that it was a strange match and one of the best of his life.

Medvedev won the US Open in 2021 and was world number one in February 2022. Previous matches where a top ten player was double-bageled in three-set tournaments include Ivan Lendl against Jimmy Connors in 1984, Roger Federer against Gaston Gaudio in 2005, and David Goffin against Tomas Berdych in 2016.
