Bedlington station opens as final piece of Northumberland Line restoration
Key Points
  • Bedlington station opened on March 29 as a key milestone in the £298.5 million Northumberland Line project.
  • The project restores passenger rail to Ashington-Newcastle after 60 years, with over 135,000 users since December 2024.
  • Costs rose from £160 million to £298.5 million, with an extra £37.9 million funded by government and local authorities.

The new station features two platforms, an accessible footbridge with lifts, and modern signaling systems. The Northumberland Line project aims to reconnect Ashington to Newcastle city center for the first time in 60 years. This project restores passenger rail services to a line that has been freight-only since the Beeching cuts of the 1960s. According to Steve Fletcher, Deputy Director of Engineering and Asset Management at the ORR, the ORR worked closely with Network Rail and Northern to support them through the authorization process.

Cost overruns have been a significant aspect of the project. The overall project cost increased from an initial estimate of £160 million to £298.5 million by December 2024. In August 2025, an extra £37.9 million was needed to complete the final stages, including Bedlington station. This additional funding was provided by the Department for Transport (£17 million), the North East Combined Authority (£10.9 million), and Northumberland Council (£10 million).

Passenger services on the Northumberland Line officially resumed on December 15, 2024, and since then, the line has seen over 135,000 users. Once fully operational, the line is expected to provide a half-hourly service between Newcastle and Ashington.

Bedlington Iron and Engine Works produced parts for George Stephenson's first train just over 200 years ago and provided rails and locomotives for railway networks across Europe. We know Bedlington is equally proud of this world-famous breed of dog, so we wanted to offer some of the owners and their canine companions free travel.

Alex Hornby, Northern's commercial and customer director

To celebrate the opening, a promotional event was held for Bedlington terriers. The first 25 Bedlington terriers to arrive at the station on Monday between 10:00 and 12:00 BST earned their owners a free travel pass. This pass is valid between any two stations on the Northern network and must be made entirely on Northern services. It can allow up to two adults and two children, and the return trip can be on a separate day. According to Alex Hornby, Northern's commercial and customer director, Northern wanted to offer some of the owners and their canine companions free travel.

Bedlington was the last of four stations to be completed after the line began operating with only two stations. Delays to the opening of Bedlington station were blamed on ageing stonework and a water pipe under the car park.

Contextually, the Bedlington terrier breed is named after the town, where they were bred to hunt rats in coal mines and race other dogs.
