Key Points
  • A beaver was discovered near Uppsala Cathedral early Tuesday morning, appearing tired and confused.
  • A coordinated rescue operation involved police, the county administrative board, and the Church of Sweden using a moving box and blanket.
  • The beaver was safely transported and released into the Fyris River at Gotlandsparken, with officials relieved at the positive outcome.

The beaver was spotted near Uppsala Cathedral just before 8 o'clock, according to major media reports. Niklas Fahlström, who was loading sandboxes into his truck at the time, described the unusual sight as he saw something passing by. The beaver appeared tired and confused and eventually lay down, multiple reports indicate.

After consulting with police and the county administrative board, a rescue operation began using a moving box and a blanket, the Church of Sweden confirmed. The beaver was guided into the box and made comfortable during the operation, officials said. The journey then went from the Cathedral, down over St.

Olof's Bridge, and on to Gotlandsparken where it could be released into the wild, according to the Church of Sweden. The beaver likely wandered up from the Fyris River, officials believe. While it is not unusual for beavers to move outside the river, this particular animal seems to have been surprised by the morning light and got stuck, the Church of Sweden reported.

After the successful release, everyone involved expressed relief that the situation ended well, with the Church of Sweden noting that all parties are just glad everything concluded positively.
