Bailiffs in Agder face surge in debt cases
Key Points
  • Bailiffs in Agder face dangerous evictions, wearing bulletproof vests and checking police records.
  • A woman refused to open her door, and an envelope was left; she must vacate or be evicted.
  • Debt settlement cases in Agder surged 50% in 2025, above the national 36.6% increase.

Bailiff Anita Andrå Andersen and her colleague Vivi wear bulletproof vests under civilian clothes and always check police records before visiting a home, according to official sources. The people they visit are often in the deepest crisis of their lives. In one recent case, a woman refused to open the door when the bailiff knocked.

The bailiff left an envelope on the door, which was later gone when they drove by. The woman must vacate the home within two to three weeks, or she will be evicted. According to NRK Sørlandet, Andersen described the encounters as extremely uncomfortable but a duty.

Many of the people they meet struggle mentally, a common consequence of long-term debt, she said. The support system should have replacement housing ready, but the burden is enormous. 6%, according to official sources.

Andersen sees a clear link between the grim numbers and the region's unique challenges. Those who have struggled over time struggle more now when it becomes harder to live, she said. Although unemployment is relatively low, the region has historical living condition challenges.

When high prices, high interest rates, and increased housing costs hit, this region is hit hard, Andersen said. The growth last year indicates that the economic pressure will persist. It takes years before people end up in serious debt problems.

5% followed. Last year the interest rate was cut twice, but on Thursday the rate may increase again. More expensive policy rate spills over to everything from mortgage rates to late payment interest.

Kjersti Teksum, daily leader of Gjeldsoffer-Alliansen, says they see an increase in people with initially comfortable salaries who are pressed to their knees.
