Australians flock to pubs after Anzac Day dawn services
Key Points
  • Long queues formed outside pubs from 8:30 am on Anzac Day
  • Two-up games drew large crowds at venues like Harbord Hotel
  • Crowds typically thin out after 3 pm; total turnout unknown

According to multiple reports, queues formed outside pubs from as early as 8:30 am on Saturday. The London pub in Paddington had a massive line and cordoned off Underwood Street due to thousands of patrons. The Clock pub in Surry Hills had a line the length of the block, while lines for the Clovelly Hotel stretched more than 100 metres down the street. The Bondi Lines Instagram page said the queue at Clovelly Hotel was the longest it's ever been.

Hundreds gathered at the Harbord Hotel car park in Freshwater to play two-up, a coin toss betting game illegal in most parts of Australia except on Anzac Day. Attendees said it took up to 45 minutes to get into the Harbord Hotel. Venues do not need a permit to host two-up on Anzac Day, but must ensure it is played in traditional format with crowd management.

Two-up at capacity, one in one out. Insane.

Anzac Day crowds at pubs generally start to lessen after 3 pm. The total number of attendees across Australia has not been confirmed, and it is unclear if any incidents or safety issues were reported due to the large crowds.
