Andreas From, the Social Democratic municipal councilor in Åsele, Sweden, has resigned from all his political positions following criticism over his purchase of a house from a woman with dementia. According to reports from P4 Västerbotten, the controversy centered on From's purchase of a house in Åsele for 280,000 kronor without the property being listed on the open market. The woman's son was reportedly unable to provide input on the sale as he was sedated following a stroke at the time of the transaction.
From stated that he has received "enormous and escalating hate" in recent times due to the attention surrounding the purchase, leading to his decision to leave his political roles. However, he maintains that he did nothing wrong in the house purchase. The man who handled the sale, Enar Nordin, who also serves as the woman's guardian, is a member of the Åsele Party, which governs the municipality together with the Social Democrats.
