Artist Discovers AI-Generated Art Resembling Her Work on Gallerix

Arts & entertainmentArts
Key Points
  • Hanna Kastl-Lungberg found AI-generated art resembling her work on Gallerix.
  • Gallerix removed motifs and criticized Kastl-Lungberg for not acknowledging this.
  • Similar issues occurred with Peléton, leading to removals and legal hopes.

Artist Hanna Kastl-Lungberg discovered four motifs on the art platform Gallerix's website last autumn that she thought resembled her own. Svenska Dagbladet was first to report about Hanna Kastl-Lungberg's discovery, and she suspects that someone used an AI service to recreate her art. She contacted Gallerix about the motifs.

Gallerix is critical of Hanna Kastl-Lungberg for not mentioning the removal in her Instagram post. According to Gallerix, all but one of the motifs were created by the same person, likely with the help of AI, and about ten copies of the motifs were sold. The Danish art platform Peléton has also found several motifs on Gallerix's website that are similar to those they sell.

You become sad, it is someone who has taken from me.

Peléton sent over 60 examples to Gallerix, and a total of 50 of the motifs sent by Peléton have been removed from sale by Gallerix. Hanna Kastl-Lungberg and her union Svenska tecknare hope the case will be legally tested. The case involving Hanna Kastl-Lungberg could become a pilot case, potentially setting a precedent for similar disputes.

Artist and designer Jessica Jämting has gained widespread attention on social media recently for taking a stand against AI art. Jessica Jämting encourages her followers on TikTok not to buy posters and prints whose motifs have been generated by artificial intelligence, reflecting broader artist activism against AI-generated content.

It is irrelevant. The problem is not whether they are still up or taken down. The damage is already done.
