Arboga School Implements New Library Following National Law Change

Key Points
  • Stureskolan in Arboga has established a new manned school library following Sweden's July 2025 library law changes.
  • New librarian Ellenor Jepsen reported lending over 200 books in her first weeks and expressed optimism about student reading habits.
  • The law requires schools to provide staffed libraries accessible to students at their own school units.

Stureskolan in Arboga has transformed its library facilities following Sweden's new school library law that took effect on July 1 last year. According to SVT Västmanland, the school previously had only a half-full bookshelf in a corner but now boasts a fully equipped library with new bookshelves lining all walls.

The school has hired Ellenor Jepsen as its new school librarian, who reported lending over 200 books in her first weeks. "We started from scratch here in Arboga," Jepsen told SVT. She expressed support for the new law requiring manned school libraries, stating that schools now need to step up their efforts.

The library at Stureskolan operates as an open space where students can socialize with friends or engage in activities like playing poker, as observed during the visit. Jepsen remains optimistic about the library's impact, saying, "I believe most here will become avid readers!"

The new legislation mandates that students should generally have access to school libraries at their own school unit and requires libraries to be staffed sufficiently to achieve their educational purposes.
