According to Apple, the encryption will be enabled by default and marked with a small padlock icon in the messaging app. The feature will initially launch in beta. It requires that both the sender's and receiver's mobile operators support the latest version of RCS.
5 has not been announced, and it remains unclear which carriers will support the updated RCS standard at launch.
