Amelia Kerr's record 179 leads New Zealand to historic ODI win over South Africa
Key Points
  • Amelia Kerr scored an unbeaten 179 to lead New Zealand to a record ODI chase victory
  • South Africa posted 346/6 with Anneke Bosch scoring 91 and others contributing half-centuries
  • New Zealand chased down 350/8 with two balls left, squaring the series

South Africa set a formidable target, posting 346 for six in the second ODI. Anneke Bosch led their batting with 91, while Laura Wolvaardt and Chloe Tryon contributed half-centuries. New Zealand faced early pressure at 21 for one before Kerr's innings turned the match.

She struck 23 fours and one six from 139 balls, with Izzy Gaze adding 68 runs. New Zealand reached 350 for eight with two balls left, securing the record chase. According to Kerr, she remained calm and focused on simplifying the task to each over, only allowing herself to think about victory late in the game.

I was really calm out there and just was so focused on, I guess, simplifying it to each over and where we needed to be to get the job done.

She expressed excitement and noted how special the moment was after hitting the winning runs. The previous record for the highest successful women's ODI run chase was held by India, who chased down 338 against Australia in the semi-finals of the 2025 World Cup. Kerr's personal ODI high score remains 232 not out against Ireland in 2018, but she rated this innings as her best knock.

The series is now tied, with the final match scheduled at an unspecified date and venue in Wellington.

And then it kind of got to like 20 [22] off 15 or whatever it was, and you start to think how cool would this be if we won. But again, I probably didn't have those thoughts till that moment in the game and just had to bring myself back to the present moment rather than thinking this could be really cool, making sure I get the job done.

I thought because I was pretty calm that I wouldn't show too much emotion. But when I did hit the winning runs, I was actually pretty fizzed. And I guess it shows how much it means to me. I'm a pretty relaxed character with celebrations and all that stuff. But that was special. I think to get a big hundred like that but in a big chase against a quality side, it's, yeah, definitely No. 1.
