Key Points
  • The Alskog church on Gotland is being restored after four years without heating due to a broken oil boiler.
  • A glass wall will partition part of the church to reduce heating costs during services.
  • New pew heaters and portable units will provide warmth, with efforts to minimize impact on the medieval building.

The church in Alskog has been without heating since the oil boiler broke down four years ago. According to sources, to save on heating costs, part of the church will be partitioned off with a glass wall. The tower room will be partitioned off with a glass wall so that the entire church does not need to be heated during services.

The restoration includes installing new heating in the church pews. Linda Anderberg Gustafson, bell-ringer in the Fardhem-Garda parish, says, "In the outer room we will have pew heaters so that people sitting in place will have some comfort. " She adds, "No one has been very pleased, but at the same time I think visitors understand given the energy prices in recent years.

" Victor Proos, church restorer at Gotlandsbyggen, notes, "The challenge is that the walls are not straight. " The exact timeline for the completion of the restoration and the total cost of the restoration and heating upgrades have not been disclosed. The restoration aims to improve comfort while preserving the historical structure.
