A married couple in Emmaboda, Sweden, has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty and violations of animal welfare laws, according to reports from SVT Småland. The charges follow an investigation that revealed approximately 22 animals were kept in inadequate conditions from May to September 2024. The animals, which included hedgehogs, turtles, birds, and rabbits, were reportedly kept in a residential property without proper access to food, clean water, appropriate temperatures, or veterinary care.

The County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) reportedly alerted authorities after a control inspection in September 2024, leading to all animals being seized. Veterinary examinations indicated that at least seven animals suffered from the conditions, with some found to be undernourished, sick, or with untreated injuries. The suspects allegedly had existing animal bans but continued to care for the animals despite these restrictions.

Aggravated animal cruelty carries a potential prison sentence of six months to four years in Sweden. The accused have reportedly not denied having the animals but have not yet provided final statements in the investigation.
