Airlines can change flights under schedule change rules
Key Points
  • Schedule changes are governed by booking terms, not law.
  • Airlines should notify passengers at least 14 days in advance.
  • Passengers moved to a different flight may be entitled to compensation.

Schedule changes differ from unexpected disruptions such as bad weather, crew shortages, or technical problems, MSE said. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) advises that airlines should notify passengers at least 14 days in advance of any schedule change. Airlines typically inform customers by email, but passengers are also advised to check the 'manage my booking' section on the airline's website. Some airlines say they will call or text if a customer does not respond to an email. If a booking was made through a travel agent, the agent is expected to contact the passenger about changes.

If a passenger is moved to a different flight with a different flight number, they are likely covered under EU or UK flight cancellation laws, entitling them to a full refund or alternative flight, and possible compensation, according to MSE. However, for minor changes, each airline has its own definition, ranging from delays under an hour to under 12 hours. MSE noted that terms and conditions usually state the passenger must accept the delay, but it is worth trying to get a refund or alternative. Airports only confirm flight slots about three months before departure, so the planned slot may not be available on the day, and airlines may change timings if they change the aircraft type, MSE added.
