The rise in AI-related cheating is prompting universities in Norway and Sweden to adapt their exam formats and enforcement policies. At the University of Oslo, 77 cases of suspected cheating were handled in 2025, 52 of which involved AI tools, according to university officials. Universities in Bergen, Tromsø, Stavanger, Oslo, and Southeast Norway are continuously adapting exams to AI tools, officials said.
At the University of Southeast Norway (USN), more course coordinators are moving away from home exams, according to university representatives. At the University of Tromsø, the proportion of in-school exams has increased at the expense of home exams, officials noted. In Sweden, only two higher education institutions penalize more cheaters than Jönköping University, according to institutional data.
Less than one percent of all students are caught cheating, UKÄ reported.
