The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) reported that previously, plagiarism was the largest category of disciplinary cases, but AI-related cheating has now surpassed it. Despite the increase, less than one percent of all students are caught cheating, UKÄ noted. Disciplinary cases can also involve disruptive behavior or harassment, in addition to various forms of cheating.
At Jönköping University (JU), only two higher education institutions convict more cheaters than JU, according to Jönköpings-Posten. AI cheating is now the most common reason for disciplinary actions at Swedish higher education institutions, the newspaper reported. It remains unclear which specific AI tools are being used for cheating, how universities are detecting AI-assisted cheating, and what penalties apply compared to other forms. The two institutions with higher cheating rates than JU have not been identified, and a breakdown of disciplinary cases by type for 2025 is not yet available.
