AAIB finds excess weight contributed to fatal glider crash at Darley Moor

Accidents & disastersAccidents
Key Points
  • A pilot and passenger died in a glider crash at Darley Moor Airfield in April last year.
  • The AAIB investigation found the glider's weight was over 35kg above the maximum payload, contributing to the crash.
  • Safety improvements have been implemented by the operating club and gliding association in response to the incident.

Edward Browne, 66, and James Litchfield, 64, were killed when their Hoffmann H36 Dimona glider crashed at Darley Moor Airfield on April 8 last year. Witnesses described the aircraft swaying moments after takeoff before rolling swiftly to the right and plunging to the ground, with the AAIB report later characterizing the movements as 'wallowing' before a steep nose-down fall from about 100 to 150 feet. The AAIB published its report into the crash, concluding that the glider's weight when taking off was a contributory factor.

6kg, but the investigation found the payload was more than 35kg above that at 206kg. 6kg, approximately 35kg above the maximum allowable takeoff weight for non-lifting parts. The aircraft took off from the runway as expected but was then unable to maintain a safe climbing speed or trajectory.

Investigators were unable to determine why the aircraft did not climb normally or what factors contributed to the pilot not being able to carry out a successful forced landing. The inquiry did not find any evidence of technical issues affecting engines, and a 'Daily Inspection' book was not signed, meaning there was no evidence of calculations about weight and balance. An earlier error following a weighing report had put the maximum payload at 184kg.

In response, the glider's operating club has taken safety action to amend its flight booking processes, including requiring online data capture and flight waivers, and the British Gliding Association has written to its member clubs reiterating guidance on introductory flights. James Litchfield was bought the flight experience by a family member, according to the AAIB report.
