A76 road closure threatens Sanquhar town centre
Key Points
  • A76 in Sanquhar closed June 1–July 10 for Tolbooth Museum repairs
  • 50-mile diversion via Cumnock and Thornhill
  • Business owners fear devastating economic impact on town centre

The A76 road through Sanquhar will be shut for six weeks from June 1 to allow stonework repairs to the Category A-listed Tolbooth Museum, according to multiple reports. The council said the closure is necessary to keep workers and motorists safe due to the narrow carriageway beside the building. Initial work from May 18 will be managed using temporary traffic lights. During the total shutdown, drivers will face a diversion of around 50 miles via Cumnock and Thornhill.

Local business owners warn the closure could be devastating and may 'kill off' the town centre. According to Daily Express - UK News, Charles Brown, owner of C&M Brown newsagents, described the situation as potentially devastating and estimated the closure could cost him hundreds of pounds each day in lost income. Emma Gilchrist, who runs a nearby convenience store, told the same outlet that she fears major supply problems as delivery lorries are forced onto the diversion route. She also noted that many residents in Sanquhar are elderly or do not drive, making local shops a lifeline.

The situation could be devastating.

The council has not specified what alternative measures were considered, nor how it plans to support affected businesses during the closure. The condition of the Tolbooth Museum that necessitates the repairs has not been detailed.
