Alice Gallacher, 103, is being celebrated on International Women's Day at the Bridgeton Community Learning Campus, which she has attended for 20 years. She attributes her long life to not smoking, stating, 'My health is fine. I have nothing really to worry about.
' Gallacher worked at a meat market and as a lollipop lady in her younger days, recalling, 'I worked in the meat market. It was good work. ' She has lived in Bridgeton since she was seven years old, according to Lesley Ward, the manager of the community campus.
My health is fine. I have nothing really to worry about. I don't smoke, which has helped.
Ward describes Gallacher as a 'wee trooper and is our national treasure,' adding, 'Alice is very community minded and doesn't have a bad word to say about anyone. ' Gallacher enjoys the company at the community centre, saying, 'I enjoy the company. They are really, really nice people.
' She recalls that in the past, everyone in Bridgeton was friendly and helped each other, noting, 'All the kids played together. Everybody helped each other out. ' However, she feels that everything has changed and would be afraid to go out now compared to the past, stating, 'We would be afraid to go out now.
I enjoy the company. They are really, really nice people. I have been coming for years. I started coming when they first opened.
' Ward emphasizes the importance of the community centre, funded by grants and other sources with support from organizations including the council, saying, 'If you don't have community facilities. You have people staying at home. It is no life - sitting in front of the TV.
