Edwin Morrison, 81, was sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to rob a 95-year-old woman in her home in Little Hulton, Salford, on January 27, where he strangled her and bound her hands with cable ties. The attack was interrupted by the arrival of the victim's mobile hairdresser, and Morrison, who has terminal cancer, claimed financial desperation motivated the crime.

Jonathan Ezard, a former Greater Manchester Police officer, died after falling from Barton Bridge over the M60 in Salford on March 31, with circumstances not thought to be suspicious. He had resigned last year amid a misconduct investigation into allegations of sending misogynistic messages and sharing images of a female colleague.
