Thousands of civilians have fled the opposition-held town of Akobo in eastern South Sudan following an evacuation order issued by the army, with the exodus beginning on Saturday night. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan said Monday it would not comply with a government order to shut down its base in Akobo, warning that military operations gravely endanger civilians.
