  • Major youth violence and car fires erupted across Sweden on Monday evening, with thousands gathering and dozens of vehicles set alight in multiple cities.
  • Police are investigating potential connections between the widespread incidents, which occurred just three weeks before Sweden's general election.
  • Separately, a gas canister explosion risk in Glumslöv halted traffic, with bomb disposal units called in to reduce the risk.

Dramatic footage showed gangs of masked youths targeting vehicles in shopping centre and hospital car parks, with the largest group gathering in Trollhättan north of Gothenburg where as many as 40 people threw stones and started fires. Reports indicated young people also set cars on fire in Hjällbo, Malmö, and Helsingborg, with footage showing cars burning bright orange in a large car park at Frölunda Torg, which includes a specialist hospital and a major shopping centre. Emergency services tackled the apparent outbreak of violence with no injuries reported from these widespread incidents, according to Swedish police, who said all fires had been extinguished by midnight and identification of young people was ongoing, though it was unclear if any arrests had been made.

The violence occurred against the backdrop of an earlier gathering on Easter Eve, when thousands of youth gathered on the parking lot outside the Asecs shopping center. A caravan started burning around 23:00 in the middle of the large crowd, though why the caravan caught fire remains unclear. Police on site had to detain a large number of people amid a high level of intoxication, and despite thousands being present on the parking lot, no person was injured in connection with the fire itself. However, several cases of assault were reported from the Asecs gathering.

Police were investigating whether the various blazes which broke out across the country were related, with authorities noting that while most fires started within a short period of time, it cannot be excluded that there is a connection between the fires. The case will be investigated to determine if coordinated action or copycat behavior drove the simultaneous outbreaks. This investigation comes as Swedish Television reported around 80 vehicles had been vandalised in total, with three caravans and a truck also targeted, and witnesses describing 'dark-haired' youngsters launching the attacks.

The violence comes just three weeks before Swedish voters go to the polls in a general election, potentially influencing political discourse around public safety and youth unrest.

Separately, Swedish Television reported a risk that gas canisters could explode in Glumslöv, leading to all traffic near the town being halted by the Swedish Transport Administration. The stoppages affected the Pågatåg train line, road 1350, plus buses between Landskrona and Helsingborg, with police indicating on their website that the stoppages could last until 2 am on Thursday. Experts from the Malmö police bomb disposal unit were called in to try to reduce the risk of explosions.

Other car fire incidents occurred elsewhere in Sweden, with several cars set on fire on a street in Trollhättan, though rescue services reported no risk of spreading to buildings. In Hertsön, two cars were destroyed in a fire, with police investigating and awaiting analysis results, while in Motala, two cars were destroyed in a fire, with one car burning on a parking lot and damaging another nearby.

Internationally, unrelated incidents included a fire that broke out at Kuwait International Airport after Iranian drone attacks, damaging radar systems and fuel tanks with no injuries. In Lebanon, nine healthcare workers were killed in five separate attacks on Saturday, with 51 killed in March, amid broader regional tensions where Hezbollah attacked Israel on March 2, drawing Lebanon into the war, with Israel conducting large-scale attacks since.

Additional police investigations in Sweden included a car burning on a church parking lot in Tierp, suspected to be arson with several windows smashed, investigated as vandalism. An explosion occurred in Taxinge, Nykvarn, causing minor damage to a house and investigated as dangerous destruction. Police also found a silkie chicken in a trash room in Gothenburg and are trying to find its owner, while a Swedish person won 26 million kronor in the lottery by getting seven correct numbers and two in a row on Joker.

Other incidents abroad included a man dying after being run over by a quad bike outside Skyttorp near Uppsala. In Finland, a van caught fire twice in Jakomäki, Helsinki, with the cause unknown and no police investigation reported, while a car caught fire on a parking lot in Kuopio, with the driver escaping unharmed and the fire likely starting in the engine. In Norway, three people were arrested and suspected after a car fire in Kongsvinger that spread to a nearby apartment, with one hospitalized, and a car fire in Tromsø spread to a carport, with no one in the house and the car totaled. A Norwegian teenage girl was found dead in the water in Gran Canaria, with cause unknown.

In the UK, a person was taken to hospital after an explosion at a retail park in Bradford, Yorkshire, with one car damaged. A train fire near Newton Abbot halted services, with emergency services at the scene.

Geopolitical context includes concerns that Israel's air defense missile stockpiles are critically low after Iranian attacks, with the U.S. aware but uncertain about sending reinforcements.

In acute news situations, SVT's news should stand for factualness and impartiality, publishing true and relevant content, and they report what they know and don't know.
