Sysav's Skyzero carbon capture project faces financial hurdles
Nyckelpunkter
  • Sysav plans a 3.7 billion kronor carbon capture facility called Skyzero to capture 400,000 tons of CO2 annually from 2030.
  • The project faces financial challenges, with only 4 of 14 owner municipalities agreeing to provide guarantees and no recent EU funding.
  • Sysav will make a final investment decision in 2027, relying on loans, grants, and rising emission allowance prices for profitability.

7 billion kronor, with Sysav aiming to start capturing carbon dioxide from 2030. At full capacity, the planned facility is expected to capture around 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. According to major media reports, the capture corresponds to up to 95% of the carbon dioxide emissions from the lines the facility will be connected to.

However, Sysav has not received EU funding in its two most recent applications. To increase its chances in the spring application, Sysav has asked its owner municipalities to provide financial guarantees in the form of loans or surety bonds. 2 billion kronor, but Lund municipality has chosen not to promise money to Sysav at present.

According to major media reports, only 4 out of 14 owner municipalities have said yes to providing financial guarantees. Sysav has declined to comment until all owner municipalities have made decisions on the issue. The Sweden Democrats voted alone against the loan in Malmö's municipal executive board.

The final investment decision for the project will be made by Sysav in 2027. Sysav believes it will be more profitable to build the billion-kronor facility than not to build it, expecting the price of emission allowances to rise sharply over the next 10–15 years. Sysav describes the facility's technology as an established technical solution with clear climate benefits.

The carbon dioxide would be converted into liquid and stored underground, but a final storage site has not yet been chosen. The majority of the financing is intended to be based on loans and grants from the EU and the state, with at most 5% financed by Sysav's own funds.
