  • Federal judge rules U.S. president's defunding of public service channels illegal
  • Spanish Prime Minister's wife faces corruption charges, prompting legal battle
  • Court dismisses Trump's defamation lawsuit against Wall Street Journal

Federal Judge Randolph Moss ruled this week that the decision to cut funding for public service channels is illegal and unconstitutional. Last year, the U.S. president, with the support of Congress, withdrew federal funding from the country's public service channels.

In Spain, Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is formally accused of several corruption crimes. The investigation into corruption allegations against Gómez has been ongoing since April 2024. Formal charges have been filed by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who says he has found sufficient evidence supporting the suspicions. Prime Minister Sánchez has filed a lawsuit against Judge Peinado because the judge did not allow written responses from the prime minister, requiring oral testimony instead.

The U.S. president has long called the public service channels 'left-leaning.'

Donald Trump, U.S. President

Former U.S. President Donald Trump sued the Wall Street Journal and owner Rupert Murdoch for defamation after the newspaper published an article about his friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. A court in Florida dismissed Trump's defamation lawsuit, stating that Trump failed to show there was malicious intent with the publication, but Trump has the opportunity to file a revised lawsuit.

In Malmö, a person on an e-scooter was hit in an intersection. The alarm about the e-scooter incident came just after 9:30 PM on Monday, and police and ambulance responded to the scene.

U.S. and Iran could meet again, with a new meeting being discussed, as officials in the Trump administration are discussing the possibility of a new physical meeting with Iranian representatives before the ceasefire expires next week. If negotiations progress, the deadline for the ceasefire could also be extended.

In Varberg, a person was rescued from a burning apartment on Monday evening. The alarm about the apartment fire came at 8:15 PM and several units from the rescue service, police, and ambulance responded to the scene.

Trump was furious about the publication and demanded around ten billion dollars in what he called 'a historic legal action'.

The Justice Department's investigation of a $2.5 billion renovation project at the Federal Reserve didn't find any evidence of a crime, a federal prosecutor privately conceded under questioning by a skeptical judge earlier this month. Chief Judge James Boasberg quashed government subpoenas issued to the Federal Reserve, dealing a severe blow to the government's investigation. Judge Boasberg said the government had produced essentially zero evidence to suspect Fed Chair Jerome Powell of a crime.

The investigation has delayed Senate consideration of Kevin Warsh, President Donald Trump’s pick to replace Powell when his term ends May 15. Powell can remain as chair past May 15 if no replacement has been approved. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro launched the probe to investigate whether Powell misled Congress last summer during testimony about the Federal Reserve's building renovation project. Trump denied any involvement in the probe back in January, but he has blasted the Fed chair for his management of the central bank. The ruling is a major blow to President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Powell for not lowering interest rates. Trump in January nominated former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh to run the central bank. With Republicans having a slim majority in the Senate Banking Committee, which approves Fed chair nominations, Republicans need Senator Thom Tillis on board with confirming Warsh.

On Truth Social, Trump wrote: 'I told Rupert Murdoch that it was a bluff, that he shouldn't publish this false article. But he did, and now I'm going to sue the shit out of him and his lousy newspaper.'

Friday afternoon, Pirro said the Justice Department will appeal the judge's ruling.

A federal judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s efforts to compel higher education institutions to provide data proving they do not consider race in admissions. The ruling, issued by U.S. District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV in Boston, grants a preliminary injunction following a lawsuit brought by a coalition of 17 Democratic state attorneys general. President Donald Trump ordered the data collection on race in college admissions in August, expressing concerns that colleges and universities were using personal statements and other proxies to consider race, which he views as illegal discrimination. The Education Department has defended its initiative, asserting that taxpayers deserve transparency regarding how money is spent at institutions receiving federal funding. The National Center for Education Statistics was tasked with collecting the new data, including the race and sex of applicants, admitted students, and enrolled students.

Judge Boasberg wrote: 'A mountain of evidence suggests that the Government served these subpoenas on the Board to pressure its Chair into voting for lower interest rates or resigning.'

James Boasberg, Chief Judge

Several unknowns remain unresolved in these cases. The current injury status of the person hit by an e-scooter in Malmö has not been confirmed, and the current injury status of the person rescued from the burning apartment in Varberg is unclear. Whether the U.S. and Iran will actually hold a new meeting before the ceasefire expires, and if so, when and where, is uncertain. What specific evidence Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has to support the corruption accusations against Begoña Gómez has not been publicly detailed. When the Senate Banking Committee will vote on Kevin Warsh's nomination to replace Jerome Powell as Fed Chair is also unknown.

Boasberg wrote: 'There is abundant evidence that the subpoenas' dominant (if not sole) purpose is to harass and pressure Powell either to yield to the president or to resign and make way for a Fed Chair who will. On the other side of the scale, the government has offered no evidence whatsoever that Powell committed any crime other than displeasing the president.'

James Boasberg, U.S. District Judge

She blasted Boasberg's ruling at a news conference Friday, calling it outrageous, and vowed that the decision will be appealed by the DOJ.

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney

Pirro fumed: 'Jerome Powell is now bathed in immunity. This is wrong, and it is without legal authority.'

The inquiry triggered a rare public response from Powell, who said in a January 11 video statement that the investigation was merely a pretext for Trump's ongoing effort to pressure the Fed to cut interest rates and undermine the central bank's independence.

Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve Chair

Powell said in the video: 'The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president. This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions - or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.'

Just yesterday, Trump posted on Truth Social: 'Where is the Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome 'Too Late' Powell, today? He should be dropping Interest Rates, IMMEDIATELY, not waiting for the next meeting!'

Trump said: 'I don't know anything about it, but he's certainly not very good at the Fed, and he's not very good at building buildings.'

Pirro said she would appeal the decision, which she said had 'neutered' her ability to investigate crime.

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney

Pirro said at a fiery press conference responding to the decision: 'This process has been arbitrarily undermined by an activist judge,' which quashed subpoenas from her office seeking information from the bank about cost overruns at renovations of its offices.

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney

She dismissed questions about whether her pursuit of the issue would complicate White House efforts to replace Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell, calling the issue 'white noise'.

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney

Boasberg said the Government has produced essentially zero evidence to suspect Chair Powell of a crime; indeed, its justifications are so thin and unsubstantiated that the Court can only conclude that they are pretextual.

James Boasberg, U.S. District Judge

Pirro told reporters, 'Politics is not the lane I'm in right now. We are focused on the law. We're focused on the people of the District. We are not focused on politics.'

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney

Pirro said that Boasberg determined that Powell is 'beyond reproach.'

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney

Pirro said, 'This is the antithesis of American justice.'

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney

Pirro added, 'This judge has put himself at the entrance door to the grand jury, slamming that door shut.'
