Nottingham man jailed after dangerous e-scooter police chase
Nyckelpunkter
  • Graham McCarthy was jailed for 75 weeks after a dangerous e-scooter police chase in Nottingham.
  • A 14-year-old e-scooter rider was involved in an incident in Stjørdal, Norway, with the scooter seized.
  • Police in Norway are increasing enforcement on e-scooters, including a speed check in Malvik where a rider was caught at 50 km/h.

Graham McCarthy, 43, of Denstone Road, Nottingham, was spotted by officers riding an e-scooter towards the city centre, according to Nottinghamshire Police. McCarthy was told to pull over but refused, leading to a 10-minute pursuit during which he swore at officers and weaved dangerously through traffic and pedestrians, Nottinghamshire Police reported. The chase ended when McCarthy lost control at over 20mph trying to pass a bus, as stated by Nottinghamshire Police. McCarthy pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence, criminal damage, and possessing Class B drugs with intent to supply, according to Nottinghamshire Police. On Monday, 16 March, McCarthy was jailed for 75 weeks and disqualified from driving for 19 months, Nottinghamshire Police said.

In a separate incident, a 14-year-old driver of an electric scooter was involved in an event in Stjørdal on Sunday morning, according to Sunnmørsposten. The scooter was seized, and it will be considered whether it should be confiscated entirely, multiple reports indicate, but the outcome of that consideration remains unknown. This follows broader police actions, as the Emergency Police say they will have increased attention towards electric scooters going forward, according to reports. On Saturday, the Emergency Police conducted a speed check at Malvik, multiple reports show, where an electric scooter rider sped past the laser at 50 km/h, according to operations manager Bjørnar Gaasvik. The electric scooter was seized and a criminal case is being opened on the matter, but the penalties imposed on the rider have not been specified. Anders Sjøtrø, district leader of UP Midt-Norge, noted, 'The background is that more and more people are buying such scooters privately. Scooters that go way too fast. In addition, there is a worrying development when it comes to accidents.' Gaasvik added, 'In that connection, there was an electric scooter rider who sped past the laser at 50 km/h.'
