The exact reason for the AI-skilled worker's suicide on March 5 remains unknown, and it is unclear whether NAB management has officially responded to the allegations of bullying and toxic culture.

Former employees have detailed instances of bullying and harassment, including Mitchell, who emailed CEO Andrew Irvine saying he was being driven toward the grave after being hounded over a $4,700 redundancy overpayment, according to Mitchell, a former NAB worker. Mitchell was among three ex-employees who spoke to the Daily Mail about a culture of relentless bullying at NAB, with Mitchell opting for redundancy and receiving his last pay cheque in October, but then harassed by payroll for another two months over the overpayment, as NAB didn't calculate his negative annual leave balance before issuing his final pay, which they were required to do. A second worker was forced to log bathroom breaks as personal time and was hounded for $2,000 in overpayments after redundancy, multiple reports indicate.

Systemic issues at NAB include staff being bullied into cruel and unfair Performance Improvement Plans to make them quit because redundancies are too expensive, according to insiders. A woman said NAB is undergoing a restructure and is unconcerned by unfair dismissal claims, which cost around $20,000, compared to redundancy packages worth hundreds of thousands, and she was told to resign with 16 weeks' pay or give up her work with just 12 weeks' pay after complying with a PIP, multiple reports indicate. The woman said NAB's Employee Assistance Program is useless, according to the woman, a NAB employee.

The workplace environment is marked by low morale and dangerous architecture, with one worker in the fraud team saying they often joked about plunging from the rooftop because morale was so low, according to a worker in NAB's fraud team. Another worker said colleagues were afraid to stand near the atrium in the middle of the 14-storey Docklands building, describing it as a love letter to staff to end their lives, according to a NAB worker. It's understood workers at NAB have been offered counselling services, multiple reports indicate.
