  • A teacher on Öland is being prosecuted for assault, admitting to events but denying the crime.

Teaching assistants Elizabeth Kay Sutton and Otoria McClung are due in court after they allegedly assaulted children at a primary school within months of one another. Two teaching assistants have been fired after one allegedly hit a 10-year-old pupil in the face and another is accused of putting a boy, aged 5, in a chokehold. Elizabeth Kay Sutton and Otoria McClung were charged with assault and battery upon a student.

Police arrived at Elgin Elementary School on January 8 after headteacher Gabe Winn claimed Sutton, 38, had grabbed a 10-year-old pupil, forced him back into his chair before she hit him in the face. CCTV footage allegedly recorded the moment Sutton appeared to move her arm toward the boy's face, which resulted in him turning his head away from the teaching assistant. The boy's teacher later saw a red mark on his face after he came back from lunch break. Sutton had only been a teaching assistant for five months and was later arrested then pleaded not guilty. She went on to be fired, as reported by the Lawton Constitution.

Months after the arrest, McClung was allegedly seen carrying a 5-year-old in a chokehold down a hallway. A witness told police the boy's face was red and that he had been crying and hitting McClung's arm as she reportedly said she could not deal with the situation. McClung, 37, was arrested following the March 13 allegations.

Superintendent Nate Meraz said in a statement that all of the appropriate authorities were notified immediately, and went on to assure parents all employees must pass a background check and professional references are called prior to employment. He added that both of these instances were reported to administration by fellow employees which reflects the culture of accountability there. Meraz further stated his philosophy on personnel is that if there is reasonable hesitation in the interview process, they will not employ someone, and once employed, if someone harms a student, they will be terminated, emphasizing that Elgin Public Schools’ highest priority is the safety and well-being of its students.

An unruly catfight at a youth softball game has gone viral after a coach was charged for instigating the brawl. Meredith Haskew Grant, a coach for a little league softball team in Georgia, was arrested after she allegedly attacked the opposing team’s coach. Video of the fight exploded on social media, showing an infuriated Grant lunging at another coach after the elementary school kids were high-fiving on Saturday. Grant is seen slamming her down, and the two begin wrestling on the ground, while other adults stand there stunned as the girls flee to the dugouts. As the two scrap, a rock rendition of Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' is heard blaring over the speakers.

The women broke free from each other's grasp, and after it seemed like they were done fighting, Grant went back for more. The coach is seen yanking the other woman by her shirt and pulling her hair as they both tumble back into the dirt. Grant then ends up on top of the other coach, throwing punches as other adults rush in to break up the fight. Other parents are heard shouting at the girls to get in the dugout amid the screaming and chaos. Despite her account, police reviewed the video and said Grant was the aggressor, adding that she shoved the opposing coach. A separate coach tried to intervene and break up the brawl, but he said he was pushed by Grant, per the report. The rowdy coach snatched the woman by the hair, where she pulled her to the ground and punched her in the face, according to the report.

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office arrested Grant that day, and slapped her with a misdemeanor battery charge. She has since bonded out of jail, and United States Fastpitch Association state director Jeff Britt banned her from coaching in all future tournaments.

In a separate case, a teacher on Öland is being prosecuted for assault after an incident in May last year at a school. The teacher allegedly grabbed a student's neck and held the grip while leading them out of the classroom. The incident was allegedly witnessed by teacher colleagues who are expected to testify.

The teacher admits to the course of events but denies the crime.

A student admitted assaulting a Reform UK candidate during the Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival. A judge said the student took exception to his political views. Truro Crown Court heard how 20-year-old Owen Bradbury exchanged words with Steve Rubidge in June 2024 and kicked him once as he was handing out election leaflets. Bradbury, of Tremenheere Avenue, Helston, admitted assaulting Rubidge, 51, and was sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge.

Recorder Christopher Quinlan said it had been an impulsive act which Bradbury had immediately regretted, and he had made a mistake for which he now had a criminal conviction. The recorder made no order for costs or compensation. At the time of the incident, the deputy leader of Reform UK, Richard Tice, said the Truro and Falmouth candidate had been the victim of a nasty attack which he said had left Rubridge shaken and with ligament injuries.

A PE teacher at an Essex secondary school pulled a Year 8 student across the floor of a changing room after the girl spent too long tying her shoes, a misconduct hearing was told. Charlotte Venables, who worked at Stewards Academy in Harlow, seized the pupil by her ankle before dragging her from the room, the hearing stated.

Cornelia Jansson, 15, says she was bullied constantly before changing schools. Cornelia Jansson goes to a music class at Stålforsskolan and finds safety there after years of bullying.

In mid-March, a teacher and class were moving inside the school, and it became crowded and messy in a staircase. A girl claims that the teacher pressed his clenched fist against her hand when she was holding the stair railing. Another girl claims that the teacher hit or grabbed her arm hard.

A student is being cared for by the health service after a serious violence incident at a junior high school in Harstad on Friday. A student is alleged to have been exposed to violence by other students. Police have control over those who are supposed to be involved. The case is being followed up with further investigation and questioning.

According to a report to the Swedish Work Environment Authority, an incident occurred at Anpassad grundskola in Finspång, which shares premises with Nyhemsskolan, in early March. Staff working with an outwardly aggressive student were physically exposed in several ways by a student who was angry and wanted to go home during the work shift. The staff received blows to the face from a bag and many kicks to the legs.

A fight broke out during a break, in March last year, when some students were playing billiards at the school. Two of the students got into an argument about derogatory comments. Witnesses have during the investigation described how the 15-year-old grabbed the other student's shirt and hit him in the face. Two classmates tried to intervene but fell to the floor together with the two.

Sutton and McClung are next due to appear in court on May 20.
