Arnold Schwarzenegger was honored with an honorary doctorate by Ulster University in Belfast. The university said the doctorate is in recognition of Schwarzenegger's contributions to public service, environmental advocacy, and the arts. An honorary doctorate is the highest honor Ulster University can bestow and is awarded to inspirational people who have made an outstanding impact in their field. Few individuals have shaped global culture across sport, film, and public life in the way that Dr. Arnold Schwarzenegger has.

Schwarzenegger's connection to Belfast traces back to his first visit in 1966 as a young bodybuilder, following an invitation from a local bodybuilding judge. Schwarzenegger described this visit as a breakthrough moment because it was the first time he was invited to speak in public. He reflected on its impact, saying that what happened that day in Belfast was so important to him because every single time afterwards when he won a competition he went to the microphone, eventually leading to his love for public speaking.

During that 1966 visit, Schwarzenegger faced significant challenges: he could not speak English at the time and nearly fainted when asked to address the crowd at a bodybuilding event. With the help of his host, he managed to mutter a few words and received a standing ovation from the crowd. Schwarzenegger arrived penniless in 1966 but was given a warm welcome, allowed to stay in the judge's house in Dundonald, and treated to an Ulster fry, illustrating the local support that helped him overcome his public speaking anxiety.

In his recent visit, Schwarzenegger was invited to meet students and athletes at Ulster University's campus in Belfast city center. Attendees described the event as unbelievable, random but crazy, and a big deal for the city and country to host such a global icon.

The return to Belfast was orchestrated through a surprise element: Schwarzenegger was tricked into coming back during a video call with Ulster University's chancellor and vice-chancellor several months ago. When asked if he gives speeches, Schwarzenegger replied affirmatively, to which university officials responded that he would give one on 30 March in Belfast. Schwarzenegger later remarked that he was tricked and couldn't get out of it anymore.
